Report Local—Issue No. 5

Every month, our Report Local newsletter delivers a round-up of impactful journalism to your inbox. With stories from Report for America corps members plus examples of significant public service journalism from local news organizations across the country, Report Local showcases and celebrates the power and promise of local news.

In Issue No. 5, we highlight corps member Will Wright of the Lexington Herald-Leader, whose work in the “Stirring the Waters” series on the drinking water crisis in central Appalachia won a McClatchy President’s Award. Wright has brought attention to issues with unreliable service and poor quality water in Kentucky, where state regulators have opened are investigating utilities that lose water due to poor infrastructure. We also feature the service project of corps member Obed Manuel, who is working with high school students running a news organization at his alma mater, and a Q&A with corps member Alexandra Watts. And read great work from Eric J. Shelton, Mallory Falk, Ciara McCarthy and Carlos Ballesteros.

In the local journalism section, read powerful investigations from the Texas Observer, The Oregonian/Oregon Live and The Philadelphia Inquirer. We also showcase a strong collaboration from The Frontier and StateImpact Oklahoma on drug rehab programs based off of Reveal’s Rehab Reporting Network.
