WPSU is the public radio station providing NPR and local news to 13 counties in central and northern Pennsylvania. Our signal reaches about 450,000 people in small cities and towns, and through our partnerships with other public radio stations our stories often reach all of Pennsylvania. Our mission is to “spark discovery, enrich learning and strengthen community through vibrant public media.” WPSU is licensed to Penn State University, in State College.

Beat: Rural communities in the Pennsylvania Wilds

Position:

The issues facing rural communities in north central Pennsylvania are under-reported, but pressing. This reporter lives in and reports from a bureau in Kane. They cover issues affecting surrounding counties: health care access, the decline of traditional industry, brain drain, aging infrastructure and demographic shifts. The reporter monitors 8-10 local governments that are usually run by volunteers and are rarely covered. They also produce solutions journalism stories on innovations these communities create to survive.

Salary and Benefits:
$45,000-$60,000 based on experience

WPSU is licensed to Penn State, which offers generous benefits. In addition to 14 paid holidays, employees receive 24 vacation days per year, 12 sick days and one personal day. We offer health, vision, dental and life insurance. Employees can choose between a TIAA retirement plan with a 9.29% employer match or the State Employees’ Retirement System. Employees, their spouse and children receive a 75% tuition discount. WPSU will provide the reporter with a laptop and digital recording kit.
