She was a reporter, then assistant city and state editor for The Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was born and raised in Arkansas, but has called North Carolina home for years. McGee graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2021.

At a minimum, this reporting team would produce one deeply reported story per week, with video and photos that build understanding of the challenges, successes and opportunities in our communities. They also would write two or more daily stories per week. Our newsroom also offers journalists opportunities to lead reader engagement events like live Q&As and subscriber events. The resilience of our communities also will be at the forefront of our post-coronavirus reporting, as restaurants, libraries and communal spaces reopen and we grapple with a city forever changed.
