Kaitlin Cough

Kate Cough covers energy and the environment for The Maine Monitor, an investigative outlet based in Maine, where she was born and raised. She was previously a reporter and then the digital media strategist for The Ellsworth American, a 150-year-old weekly paper based in Ellsworth, Maine. While there, she won awards from the Maine Press Association and the New England Newspaper Association for her work on where local recycling really winds up, how businesses are coping with the labor shortage, and a local network of white supremacists, among other pieces. Kate graduated with honors from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Magna Cum Laude from Bryn Mawr College, and spent time in medical school before leaving to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist.

The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization located in Augusta, Maine. It was founded in 2009 by veteran journalists John Christie and Naomi Schallit to help offset some of the deeper journalism that was quickly evaporating as Maine newspapers slashed staffs. The news organization produces investigative and enterprise journalism on politics, healthcare, the environment and education, and publishes Pine Tree Watch.

David Fuchs

David is a radio reporter and producer whose work has aired on “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered” and PRI’s “The World.” He started his career with local newspapers and radio stations in California and Vermont and has spent the last two years as a freelance producer in New York City, working with organizations like Radiolab, NPR and CBS News. His work has covered everything from women’s surf contests in Morocco to anti-poaching efforts in South Africa to coastal zoning policy in California. David is a graduate of Middlebury College. Energy and environment David focuses on southern Utah, with an eye towards political coverage at the state and federal level, growth, public lands, energy, water and the environment. He covers the growth of the region, specifically St. George, which according to March 2018 estimates from the Census Bureau is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States. David works in dual capacities as a half-time general assignment reporter helping to cover the region, while the other half of the time he tackles issues such as natural resources, water and growth. He works remotely, away from the main newsroom in Salt Lake City.

Katie Brown

Katie Brown reports for Pine Tree Watch, a publication from The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting. Maine has lacked a full-time journalist focused on climate and energy and Brown is filling that role. She worked as a local newspaper reporter and community radio producer covering environmental issues while earning her master’s degree in science communication from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She moved to Washington, D.C. to complete the final step of her master’s degree, where she worked at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and contributed to a climate change communication campaign for the National Park Service. Before pursuing a career in public service journalism, Brown was an undergraduate researcher at California State University, Monterey Bay and earned a B.A. in environmental studies. She has worked as a field biologist alongside Alaskan fishermen studying fish guts and collaborated with researchers in Ethiopia to conserve indigenous church forests. Her work has been featured in the Mercury News, High Country News, Science News, and Mongabay. She has a Master Scuba Diver rating.
